A remarkable "old fashioned" Spanish textbook designed for use in the 1960s. Don't expect any 21st century vocabulary with regard to technology etc. However, as an adult learner with good prior knowledge of other languages I found this book really helpful.Particularly interesting is the speed and sequence the author introduces grammatical points. These are presented really clearly, and there are lots of translations etc. So, if you are used to studying foreign languages to a reasonable level and want to get your head around Spanish quickly, this is likely to be a really useful book. You'll probably have to supplement it with a CD to get you up to speed with the spoken language though.

Recently purchased & very good book, working through it slowly with my tutor, good exercises to do and explanations of verbs and use of Vocabulary. Only gave 4 stars as not complete the book yet but so far I'm very pleased.

Excellent structure which is aiding cumulative progression in the language. Clearly aimed at school-level pupils but it is no less valuable as a tool for 'silver' enthusiasts

Thank you absolutely marvellous. In really good condition, arrived in Spain no problem, which was a added bonus. Would highly recommend.

I learnt Spanish by myself with this book. For me it was the enormous amount of exercises which I found to be most useful. The approach worked very well for me. Each chapter begins with a short story in Spanish and all the vocabulary is provided afterwards (usefully sorted into adjectives, nouns prepositions etcetera) followed by some concise and clear points on grammar and then the exercises. The exercises usually provide a sentence and then get you to conjugate a verb inside that sentence appropriately. I wrote all the exercises out in full in a seperate notebook before progressing to the next chapter. This was a lengthy process because each chapter has 3 pages of exercises. But after filling up 2 notebooks my Spanish was of very good quality and I understood sentence structure, verb conjugation and had a good vocabulary.I would disagree that the grammar moves too fast, I found it a bit slow if anything, as long as you pay appropriate attention to the exercises the book is the gentle and gives a super strong grounding in Spanish.I used this as my main Spanish book and studied alone for 2 years, by the time I got to Spain I had no problems converting my understanding of written Spanish into real speech.

I was a complete beginner when I purchased this book and found it quickly taught me how to understand a new language in a very clear and methodical way. It has short chapters to read and translate followed by a list of new words, verbs and phrases contained in each chapter. Each chapter has an explanation of how to use the new verbs etc.... then that's followed by several exercises to help you practice what you have learned and test your knowledge. It has an English/Spanish - Spanish/English dictionary at the back as well as a list of verbs and how to form the tenses, plus a few more quick reference pages. I am still using this book now and even bought another copy to keep at work so that I can study it at any opportunity ... ¡ Este libro es bueno !
